San Francisco is typically hilly |
Today we took the bus to Saucilito (which means "place of little willows"). It is an area across the Golden Gate bridge from San Francisco. It is a well to do, upmarket area that reminds me of Double Bay in Sydney.
Explored a bit before taking the bus back to the other side. We had intended to bus over to Saucilito and walk back over the Golden Gate bridge but it didn't work out as the bus leaves Saucilito through back tunnels and does not stop until the other side. The extensive affluent influence means that tourist buses are permitted to drive over the bridge from the front (to show the great view of the Golden Gate bridge) but not permitted to on the way back. So if you are planning to walk the bridge, do it on the way and catch the bus back.
It was later afternoon by the time we got back to Fishermans wharf. We walked around and looked at some of the souvenir shops. Checked out a sourdough bread restaurant called Boudin which is pretty famous in San Francisco. Bought a bread roll and then bought some shrimp and crab from the market stalls around Fishermans Wharf. It was a nice roll but I ended up with a bit of a stomach ache after. I probably wouldn't recommend eating seafood from the stalls at Fisherman's Wharf.
Also beware of the humungous seagulls!! I haven't seen seagulls that big before.
There are a lot of shops around the wharf. We had some fun in a candy store.
Joined the night tour from the wharf and was able to see more of San Francisco by night.
Robin Williams used to stand out at Fishermans' wharf and sell jokes for 25c. One day a man gave him $1 and told him to tell him 4 jokes. The man was impressed and asked Robin to perform at his club. This is where Robin Williams got his start.
There is a church in San Francisco called Grace Cathedral that looks like a normal church from the outside. We went inside and they were running yoga classes.... Reminds me of Matt 21...
San Francisco has many earthquakes. Our guide made a comment about this building. It's probably best not to have your offices in this building when San Francisco is prone to earthquakes and it looks like this building is propped up by toothpicks...
We got a bit of an architecture/history lesson on the tour. There was a big fire in San Francisco in 1905 and so the buildings built after that look quite modern. On the outskirts of the city though you can see a lot of Victorian style buildings. The ones considered true Victorian are redwood buildings with bay windows and painted with 5 or more colours.
I was totally fascinated by the graffiti art in San Francisco.

Spot the nerd... USA has some very big boxes of candy... does this contribute to the obesity problem? |

Oh yes your pictures are showing about your fun that you have done in San Francisco. It is a stunning city with the huge range of tourist attractions. I visited it once in my life after coming from the grand canyon skywalk bus tours. I have found it very nice and attractive. There I explored its several places. Here I want to mention their names Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, Fisherman's Wharf, Cable Cars, Golden Gate Park, Chinatown, California Academy of Sciences and De Young Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. The all places were fabulous and tremendous. I would love to go there again.
