Roadtrip Day 2: Scarborough to Leeds (Wakefield)

5th Oct, 2010

The thing I like about booking B&b's is i dont have to worry about breakfast... but i think i will start to get sick of bacon and eggs... and cereal... and bread... and anything breakfasty... lol...
I'm not really that used to having breakfast but am trying to start the day right during my trip... and it also means i'm pretty full so dont have to worry about lunch till later.

So first stop was meant to be Scarborough castle... but it wasnt open =(. Only thur to mon (and it's tue!) but my delay in getting the car and shopping detour meant that i hadnt got there in time the day before.
Took a walk around the grounds before driving around the beachfront again cos it's such a pretty view... guess it reminds me of home a bit. They have a little growers market in town as well but it wasnt great... just a few stalls... even worse than Fremantle markets.

So off to Castle Howard which isnt a british heritage property but one that is highly recommended to visit.
I'm actually using Celeste's british heritage pass and guide to plan quite a bit of my trip. The pass gives you free entry to any of the properties listed and the guide book lets me plan where i'm going next cos i have no set itinery... just drive...

Castle Howard is an impressive property dating back to the 18th century. It is still inhabitated by the family... i dont remember all the names but the owner has twins named Merlin and Octavia (what names!)
I guess the thing with these old houses is the history associated with them. When the house was built, no expense was spared. The dome of the great hall is the first dome of it's time that was on a private residence and not a religious building. The grandeur of the artwork collected and antiques were all to show off the family's fortune. it's interesting how eclectic the collection is: a heap of figures from greek mythology, roman busts, a chapel with christian stained glass windows, zodiac artwork...

The house was actually used in the filming for a 1945 novel by Evelyn Waugh called Brideshead Revisited. It was an old movie but was redone a couple of years ago. I've never seen it but it starred Matthew Goode who i've seen in Chasing Liberty with Mandy Moore.

The grounds were truly beautiful. With a beautiful fountain and well trimmed gardens and even peacocks that have been brought onto the grounds.

Decided to drive on south before retiring for the night... so stopped just outside Leeds in a place called Wakefield.
